The Gatorade Company, in partnership with ESPN RISE, today announced Allison Kelley of La Salle Academy as its 2008-09 Gatorade Rhode Island Girls Soccer Player of the Year. Kelley is the second Gatorade Rhode Island Girls Soccer Player of the Year to be chosen from La Salle Academy.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Kelley as Rhode Island's best high school girls soccer player. Kelley is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year award to be announced in May.

The 5-foot-3 junior midfielder recorded 11 goals and eight assists this past season, leading the Rams (16-1-3) to the Division I state championship. A National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American selection, Kelley scored a goal in all three of La Salle's postseason games, earning Division I Tournament MVP honors. Kelley was a Providence Journal First Team All-State selection and is a member of the U.S. Youth Soccer Region I Olympic Development Program team. She has amassed 33 goals and 25 assists to this point in her scholastic career.

Kelley has maintained a B average in the classroom and she has volunteered at a local youth sports club.

"She was the heart and soul of that team," said Tom Flanders, head coach of rival Warwick Veterans High. "They never would have been the team that they were without her around. Whether scoring goals or preventing goals, she was in the front, she was in the back, she was in center-mid. She played different positions against different teams. She's a very versatile player."

Kelley will begin her senior year of high school this fall.
