The Red Sox today acquired righthanded pitcher Randor Bierd from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for right-handed pitcher David Pauley.

Bierd spent the entire 2008 season on Baltimore's 40-man roster after being acquired from the Tigers in the Rule 5 Draft on December 6, 2007. The 24-year-old went 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA in 29 major league relief appearances. He made his debut against Tampa Bay on April 2 and did not allow a run in his first seven outings, a span of 12.2 innings.

The right-hander missed from May 2-July 18 on the disabled list with a right shoulder impingement. He combined to go 0-1 with a 3.46 ERA in 11 rehab appearances/one start with the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Orioles, Single-A Frederick, and Double-A Bowie. A native of the Dominican Republic, he was originally signed by Detroit as a non-drafted free agent in 2003.

Pauley was 0-1 with an 11.68 ERA in six games/two starts for the Red Sox in 2008, his second season at the major league level and first since 2006. Overall, he posted a 0-3 record with a 9.53 ERA in nine career games/five starts for Boston. Pauley was designated for assignment by Boston on January 13.
