The Boston Red Sox have offered free-agent catcher Jason Varitek a deal worth $5 million this season, with a club option for $5 million or a player option for $3 million in the second year of the deal, according to an unnamed "source close to the negotiations" quoted by Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. Bradford reports that the team has also given Varitek a deadline to accept or reject the offer, but adds that the date is not known.
It has been a rough offseason market for Varitek, who was believed to be seeking a multiyear deal worth upward of $10 million per season. But no team has emerged as emerged as competition for the services of the Red Sox longtime catcher, who batted just .220 last season.
This episode will really test Varietek's supposed
loyalty.Like Andy Pettite who claims he only wants to play for the Yankees let's see how things shake down when the money isn't there
anymore.
