Michael Sims and Rodney Butcher both clinched spots on the Nationwide Tour today, although both will be conditional players on that tour. Their chances to compete will depend on how well they play. Sims, a former URI star, had a closing 69 in the PGA Tour Qualifying School at La Quinta, California. That gave him a six-round total of 5-under 427 and a tie for 125th place. Butcher, from East Greenwich, closed with a 74 for 430 and a tie for 137th. It took a score of 422 to earn a fully exempt berth on the Nationwide Tour. Warwick's Patrick Sheehan tied for 115th at 6-under 426. He closed with a 70. He needed to finish in the top 25 to improve his PGA Tour position for 2009. He finished 128th on last year's money list, thus has a card, but is behind the Q School graduates and the Nationwide Tour graduates from 2008. Tour veteran Harris Frazar, who had a 59 in the fourth round, won medalist honors by eight strokes. He finished at 32-under 400. |
