Dave D'Errico of North Kingstown High School has been named the 2008-09 Gatorade Rhode Island Football Player of the Year. D'Errico is the third player from North Kingstown to win the award.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes D'Errico as Rhode Island's best high school football player. D'Errico is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award to be announced in December.

The 6-foot, 205-pound senior quarterback and defensive back anchored the Skippers' single-wing offense, rushed for 2,098 yards and 26 touchdowns on 311 attempts this season for the Skippers (7-4).

D'Errico, a Rhode Island Football Coaches Association First Team All-State selection in 2007 as a running back, also completed 75-of-140 passes for 1,017 yards and 10 touchdowns against just three interceptions for North Kingstown, which lost to La Salle Academy in the Division I semifinals.

D'Errico has maintained a 3.04 GPA in the classroom. A peer mentor for special needs students at the high school, he has volunteered with the Walk for Hunger, the Rhode Island Special Olympics and church community service projects.

"D'Errico is the do-everything guy," said Chris Santos, head coach of rival Portsmouth High. "He's their quarterback and their main running back. He's a stud. He's going to (finish with) overwhelming stats, throwing and rushing."

D'Errico has verbally committed to a baseball scholarship at Hofstra University next fall.

Congrats to this young man. The Single Wing offesne sure give a "football player" tha ability ot show off his talents. Im glad to see this offense making a comeback. If hes a Single Wing "Quarterback" he's a tough nosed player.
