The Mansfield High School football team is seeking an emergency injunction against the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association that would allow Mansfield to take the field at 5:15 this afternoon for a scheduled playoff game against Bishop Feehan. The hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. today, according to Sun-Chronicle writer Mark Farinella.

The MIAA is forcing Mansfield to forfeit the game now that it has learned that the Hornets used an ineligible player throughout the season. The player, a recent transfer student who Mansfield coach Mike Redding said was inserted "about three plays at the very end of the game" for each game in question, was in his fifth year of high school, and the coaching staff and athletic department did not realize it, Redding said.

The MIAA's 11th-hour decision came after the Mansfield team had practiced for two hours yesterday.

According to the Sun-Chronicle, the school never processed the boy's transcript and the paperwork for eligibility to be cleared for a waiver. The school's athletic director contacted the MIAA after he realized the situation, and that led to decision to disqualify Mansfield from the playoffs.
