The Boston Red Sox were prepared to suspend Manny Ramirez -- and even had an official letter of suspension delivered to Ramirez -- a week before trading the slugging left fielder to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the end of July, according to a report by Pedro Gomez of ESPN. Multiple anonymous sources told Gomez that the Red Sox had the letter of suspension delivered to Ramirez at Fenway Park at 11 p.m. on Friday, July 25, after Ramirez had refused to take the field against the New York Yankees, claiming that he had a knee injury. The Red Sox lost the game to the Yankees and Joba Chamberlain, 1-0. The reason for suspension would have been Ramirez's unwillingness to play, an extremely unusual reason for a player to be suspended. Gomez reports that within two hours of the letter being delivered to Ramirez, both Manny and one of his teammates called the team to tell them that Ramirez would play in the next game, on a Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park. Ramirez was in the lineup as the Sox were knocked around on national television by the Yankees. The next week, Ramirez was sent to the Dodgers in a deal that brought Jason Bay to Boston. As a direct result of the deal, Ramirez is a free agent seeking a rich, long-term contract. 1 CommentsLeave a comment |
