John Marinatto was named as the successor to Big East Conference Commissioner Mike Tranghese, who is stepping down in June 2009 after a 19-year tenure.

Marinatto has been the league's senior associate commissioner since 2002. He'll become the third commissioner in the 30-year history of the Big East, following Tranghese and Dave Gavitt.

"John Marinatto has been a critical contributor to the growth of the conference for many years and he will continue the lineage of effective leadership for the Big East," Richard McCormick, Rutgers University president and chairman of the Big East Presidents, said in a news release.

Before joining the league office as Tranghese's top assistant, Marinatto was the sports-information and athletic director at Providence College, his alma mater. Marinatto worked under both Gavitt and Tranghese at Providence, which is a member of the Big East.

Tranghese said five months ago that he would retire after the 2008-09 academic year, ending a run that included the creation of a football league in 1991 and the expansion of the conference's basketball league that made it the largest in college sports.

Tranghese oversaw the transition of the Big East after Miami, Virginia Tech and Boston College defected to the Atlantic Coast Conference, with Louisville, Cincinnati and South Florida joining for football, plus DePaul and Marquette in basketball.
