Cumberland's Meghan McCooey wins national tennis title

Tufts University junior Meghan McCooey of Cumberland, a former Rhode Island state singles champion at Mount St. Charles, and Julia Browne won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Doubles Championship yesterday at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. McCooey and Brown, last year's runner-up, won their semifinal match 6-2, 7-5 then beat Marta Drane and Kristin Cobb from Denison College, 6-2, 6-2. As Division III national champions, McCooey and Browne will play today in the National Small College Tournament against champions from Division II, NAIA and JUCO.
