Commissioner David Stern was looking forward to tonight's ring presentation ceremony for what was admittedly a selfish reason - it seemed safe to assume the league's longtime top man would be greeted a warm welcome.
"I'm always welcome in places where I come with hardware. It's one of the few times you don't get booed as a commissioner -- when you're presenting the trophy," Stern said before the game.
But this is Boston, and while the crowd brought the house down for the champion Celtics, it rained down boos on the commissioner, who didn't seem bothered by the greeting.
Ring ceremonies are, he said, one of his favorite events no matter what.
"In this game, you have the players say that they're playing for the ring. And here you are, being part of fulfilling the goal of every player," Stern said. "It's their dream of their professional sports lifetime, and it's fun to just be a part of it."
He credited the Celtics with bringing a team-oriented mindset and style of play into the league in recent years, and that made him particularly happy to present these rings.
"We're going to have a great season, and much of it is going to be inspired by the play that the Celtics demonstrated last year. This really is about the game, and the team, and we're really grateful to the Celtics for that, and we're delighted to be giving it to them," Stern said.
