University of Rhode Island running back Joe Casey is recovering from surgery for a compound fracture of his lower left leg. Casey, a senior from Syracuse, N.Y., was injured with 6:07 remaining in the first quarter in the Rams' season-opening 27-24 victory over Monmouth Saturday at Meade Stadium. He was removed from the field and transported to South County Hospital. The helmet of a Monmouth defensive back hit Casey's leg at the end of a six-yard run to the Monmouth 13-yard line.
URI is expected to provide an update on Casey's condition later today. He is probably out for the season. If so, he could apply for a medical waiver and return for the 2009 season.
Casey has rushed for 2,915 yards in his career, fourth on the URI list and is 474 yards shy of Pat Abbruzzi's record of 3,389.
