Sox manager Terry Manager announced after tonight's second game that Josh Beckett will not get the start for the Red Sox in Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Angels after the right-hander strained an oblique muscle while throwing a side session last Friday afternoon in the rain.

Jon Lester will instead pitch for Boston, Wednesday in Anaheim. Game time is 10:07 p.m. (Eastern Time).

Diasuke Matsuzaka will start in Game 2, slated for 9:37 p.m. (Eastern Time) on Friday.

Beckett is slotted to pitch Sunday when the series comes to Boston. (Time TBA)

"If it goes the wrong way, we're going to use very good judgment," Francona said. "Friday was actually discussed and I think after Theo (Epstein) and I and John Farrell talked about it more and more and more, we thought it was pushing it. Because when you're messing around with maybe cutting short a side session or not having enough throwing, it's not just health; it's competing. He has to be able to go out there and execute his pitches. But I think he's going to be okay."
