Click the play button below to hear Sean McAdam's comments, recorded this morning. The topics: How difficult it will be for the Red Sox to emerge as division champions now, the importance of claiming the division as opposed to the wild card, David Ortiz's swing coming back to him, and Manny Ramirez's National League MVP candidacy.
Here's what Sean said about the division race:
"It's a long shot; it's not out of the realm of possibility. Remember that the Rays stumbled in New York last weekend, allowing the Red Sox to pick up some ground while they were playing Toronto at home. [Tampa has] Minnesota coming in here for four games, and the Twins are fighting for their [playoff] lives, so they'll be motivated. But certainly, if you're looking at it realistically, it's more likely that the Red Sox get in here as the wild card. The tie-breaking mechanism [for the division, head-to-head matchups] is such that the Red Sox are in reality three games back with only 10 left to play. So they're going to have to get some help if they're to finish first, and they need to obviously close some ground this weekend, or else time will really start to run out on them as far as winning the division."
And on Manny as a possible MVP in the NL:
"I think he might get some support, because voters can put 10 players on the MVP ballot, and I have no doubt that Manny is going to show up on a number of those, because even though he didn't get there until August 1, his impact on the Dodgers has been huge, obviously. But I think also, to view him as a number-one choice is a real slap in the face to people like David Wright and Carlos Delgado and Ryan Howard, and on and on the list goes. I think he'll get some consideration for lower down on the ballot, as he should, but I don't think that someone who plays less than 60 games for his team could correctly be viewed as the MVP, even acknowledging the huge impact Manny has had on that NL West race."
