The Red Sox will sack their time-honored policy of only retiring uniform numbers of Hall of Fame players when they honor Johnny Pesky this Friday night. The Red Sox host the New York Yankees at 7 p.m.
The Sox have retired the numbers of just five players: 1-Joe Cronin; 4- Bobby Doerr; 8-Carl Yastrzemski; 9-Ted Williams and 27-Carlton Fisk. Pesky, who has served the organization in all sorts of capacities since he finished a career where he played in 549 games as a shortstop, is a member of the Red Sox Hall of Fame but his number is not retired.
The team's standards for retiring numbers was as follows:
*Hall of Fame member
*Play at least 10 years with the Red Sox
*Finish career with the Red Sox
