Shalane Flanagan of Marblehead, Mass., last year's winner of the CVS Caremark Downtown 5K, took the bronze medal in the Women's 10,000-meter race in Beijing Thursday, finishing in 30:22.22 behind Ethiopian Tirunesh Diababa (29:54.66) and Turkey's Elvan Abeylegesse (29:56.34).

Her time proved to be a new American record in the event and Flanagan became just the second American woman in Olympic history to medal in the 10,000-meter race. Lynn Jennings was the first to achieve the feat in 1992 in Barcelona.

The medal win came as a surprise to Flanagan as she asked after crossing the line, "Did I do it?"

Her taking third was a surprise not only to Flanagan but improved American medal hopes overall.

Last September, Flanagan won the CVS Caremark Downtown 5K in Providence, earning her the national title in the event and has already committed to defending that title at this year's Downtown 5K event on Sept. 21 in Providence.
