The Red Sox today acquired right-handed pitcher Paul Byrd from the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The Sox -- in need of starting pitching because of Tim Wakefield's injury and Clay Buchholz' ineffectiveness -- have picked up a pitcher currently at the top of his game. Although Byrd is 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA overall, he is 4-0 in his last four starts with an ERA of 1.24. Byrd, 37, has been added to Boston's 40-man roster. The Red Sox will make a corresponding move on the active roster once Byrd reports to the club. |
