Click the play button below to hear Sean McAdam's comments, recorded this morning. The topics: Josh Beckett's date with Dr. James Andrews, whether the Sox would consider another trade to pick up a veteran pitcher, Jon Lester's outstanding (and unrewarded) work yesterday at The Stadium, and a big weekend series coming up against the White Sox.
Here's what Sean had to say about Beckett's meeting with Andrews:
"[The Red Sox] tried to downplay it, to say that this is really for Beckett's peace of mind, but when a pitcher himself says, 'I've got to go check with the most accomplished orthopedic surgeon in the country,' because he's not healthy enough to take the mound as September arrives, that certainly doesn't augur well for the pitcher or the team."
And about the Sox pitching options, minus Beckett:
"I think with Lester, Matsuzaka and Wakefield, you've got 60 percent of the rotation. And certainly Paul Byrd has been competitive enough in his three starts that you don't worry too much about him. They do have the luxury of having three off-days when they get into September, so that buys them some additional time in terms of moving people around. I just don't see the sense in running around and trying to import somebody [via trade] with three days to go before the roster deadline. I think that they'll try to patch it together here, either with Pauley or by stretching Masterson back out. I don't think the answer comes in a trade, because there's no one that can begin to approximate what Beckett means to them."
