North Kingstown's Elizabeth Beisel finished fifth tonight in the finals of the 200-meter backstroke, ending her first Olympic appearance without a medal. Her final time was 2:08.23. Beisel finished fourth over the weekend in the 400-meter individual medley. Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry won the gold medal with a world-record time of 2:05.24. American Margaret Hoelzer, Coventry's former roommate turned chief rival, took silver at 2:06.23, and Reiko Nakamura of Japan earned the bronze with a time of 2:07.13. Coventry led after 50, 100 and 150 meters on the way to a fairly easy victory. Beisel, as has been her pattern, started slowly, finishing the first 50 meters eighth out of eight, then moving up to seventh after 100 meters and sixth after 150 meters. She finished a bit off her semifinal time of 2:07.9.
