Brad Valois, the two-time defending champion, and David McAndrew, the medalist, led the way as young players dominated the first day of match play in the 103rd R.I. Golf Association Amateur today at Agawam Hunt. Valois, a URI star, came back from an early two-hole deficit to beat Jonathan Pannone in the second round, 3 and 2. Earlier, he survived a big challenge from Eddie Hjerpe, 1 up. McAndrew, the top player for Stetson this year, topped Andrew Maziarz, 4 and 3. In the second round, he needed a 20-foot birdie putt from the back fringe to edge Jonathan Pannone, 1 up. Two more rounds will be played Thursday and the 36-hole final Friday. |
