David McAndrew birdied the 18th hole to take a 1-up lead over Brad Valois today in their 36-hole title match for the R.I. Amateur Golf Championship at Agawam Hunt.

McAndrew, the tournament medalist, and Valois, the two-time defending champion, both played beautifully. Each had a 68 on his own ball as they combined for 12 birdies. McAndrew had his 68 despite having a six on the opening hole and a seven on the par-5 15th.

Valois led most of the morning, by as many as two holes. McAndrew pulled even on the 13th. Valois got back even but then McAndrew hit his approach within 10 feet on the 18th and birdied to take the lead at the lunch break.
