EAST PROVIDENCE _ David McAndrew turned in a sensational performance today as he downed Brad Valois, 7 and 5, to win the R.I. Golf Association's 103rd Amateur Championship at Agawam Hunt.

McAndrew, a 20-year-old from Rhode Island Country Club, piled up an awesome 11 birdies (several conceded) and an eagle as he pulled away in the afternoon portion of the scheduled 36-hole match.

Valois, bidding to become the first player in 48 years to win three years in a row, led by two holes as he birdied five of the first 10. He played well all day. McAndrew simply played even better.

``I had six birdies this morning and I was 1-down at the break,'' Valois pointed out. ``He played great. He deserved it.''

McAndrew finished the morning round with birdies on 17 (to match Valois) and then 18, to take the lead at the lunch break. McAndrew then began the afternoon birdie, birdie, eagle, to quickly build his advantage to four holes. McAndrew never had a bogey in the afternoon, and added three more birdies later in the round to win going away. The Stetson University junior was asked if he had ever played better.

``Probably not,'' he said. ``I probably should go finish that round. It was a lot of fun. When you see hard work pay off, it's fun. You are enjoying the moment and enjoying playing golf.''

McAndrew was the dominant player all week. He had been the medalist in qualifying at 2-undr 138. He becomes the first medalist to win since Charlie Blanchard in 2002. McAndrew is the first Rhode Island Country Club player to win since Paul Quigley in 1991.
