It has been 60 years since he died, more than 70 years since he retired from baseball, but Babe Ruth still reigns as the most legendary figure today in sports history.

He was more than a hero to the millions who followed him, transcending his profession to become a symbol of the times. He didn't just carry a team or a game. He helped carry our country.

Like he once told his boss while looking for a raise, he had a better year than the President of the United States.

In the search for the true Golden Age of American Sports, Ruth makes the most pressing case for the 1920s and '30s. And he really did call his shot.

"Can history say absolutely that one era is the Golden Age? That's tricky business. It always ends up in the eye of the beholder," says Dr. Steve Hardy, respected sports historian at the University of New Hampshire. "But people who have studied the '20s tend to think that was the greatest time (for sports in America)."
