Jacoby Ellsbury has been struggling, dropped from the leadoff spot to ninth in the batting order. He is batting a mere .223 (33 for 148) over his last 35 games, including a 4-for-15 log on the homestand.
So, with that in mind, and with the Angels starting a left-hander (Joe Saunders), Francona replaced Ellsbury with switch-hitting Coco Crisp in center field last night.
Ellsbury was batting .143 (1 for 7) against Saunders in his career. Crisp was at .267 (4 for 15).
