celtics0731.jpgThe votes are in, and projo.com readers narrowly selected the Boston Celtics' NBA championship as the top local sports story from the first half of 2008. The Celtics' run beat out the story of Olympic swimmer Elizabeth Beisel by eight votes out of 431 cast.

One reader today wrote: "Gotta say the Celtics. They worked so hard, over and over, for the long-awaited win this year. They made tons of new fans and got everyone to watch. They were classy and smart. Elizabeth Beisel comes in a close second, though, although, she may be first if things go well for her in China!"

There were eight stories nominated, representing everything from big-time professional sports to Rhode Island high school sports. We received some criticism for not making it an exclusively Rhode Island survey, but the Boston sports stories generally received more votes.

Here are the final results.

1. Celtics win NBA championship: 128
2. Elizabeth Beisel goes to the Olympics: 120
3. Patriots lose Super Bowl to Giants: 89
4. PC fires Tim Welsh and hires Keno Davis: 32
5. Three-way tie: Jon Lester no-hitter, Juliet Vongphoumy wins state golf championship, Ryan Westmoreland drafted by Red Sox: 16 each
8. Manny Ramirez hits home run number 500: 3
