BOSTON -- The Celtics took the long and slow route home from Los Angeles. They encountered problems with two planes before finally boarding a third and flying home to Boston. A trip that was scheduled to get them home at around 7 p.m. lasted until close to 11.

"It was a long day, it really was," said Doc Rivers. "I thought the funniest part of it is we get a call, we were supposed to leave at 11 [a.m.] and they called us at 9 and told us we had to run to the bus because the first plane had broken down. So we were going to get on the other one that was leaving and when we get there at the gate, we see the Lakers’ plane taking off. I was saying, 'Oh, this is nice.’ "

The Celtics not only didn’t fly on time, but they were stranded on the runway Monday for several hours. The plane they finally traveled on was not stocked with much food either.

"We actually got all the way out to the runway," said Rivers. "We jumped on, things were smooth, we get to the runway, and then the pilot comes on and said we're going to have a little delay and he said it's either going to be ten minutes or two to three hours. It was more. The only bad part about it was that we couldn't get off the plane for the most part. I bet we sat out there for three, four hours, maybe longer."
