MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP)- Former University of Connecticut basketball player Eric Hayward has been sentenced to three years in prison on sex charges.

Hayward was sentenced Thursday on charges stemming from his relationship with two teen patients at a state-run psychiatric hospital where he worked.

Hayward, a backup center with the 1992-96 Huskies, was a child-care worker at Riverview Hospital for Children and Youth in Middletown.

Hayward was fired in October 2005 after officials learned he was involved in a relationship with a 16-year-old female patient who had run away from the hospital.

In the fall of 2006, a 15-year-old girl came forward and told police she had sex with Hayward "on numerous occasions."
