If first impressions turn out to be true, then the major changes made to the TPC of Boston in the past year have made the course even more inviting for the world’s best players than in the past.

Scoring is excellent early in the first round of the Deutsche Bank Championship, the second week of the new PGA Tour playoffs. Mike Weir, the first player off the tee, just finished his round with a 6-under 65. He spoke about how course conditions made for good scoring.

``The greens were so good, so fast,’’ he said. ``It was one of my best putting rounds of the year.’’

As well as he played, he is not in the lead. Ryan Moore, a UNLV product who is one of a host of young stars on tour, is at 7-under with three to play. Heath Slocum is 5-under with one left and Brett Wetterich 5-under through 15.

Even with all the good scores, though, the bulk of the crowd is along the first and second holes right now. That’s because the threesome of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh tees off in 20 minutes.
