Pats' coach Bill Belichick just held a press conference discussing the team's first-round moves -- selecting Miami safety Brandon Meriweather at 24 and trading the 28th pick to San Francisco for the 49ers' fourth-round pick this year (110th overall) and their first-round pick next year. Belichick said the choice went down to the wire, as there "a few options" that appealed to New England, including trading the 24th pick. As to why Meriweather was the choice, he said, "He's a good, intelligent football player, he played against good players down there, he's been a productive player in the passing game." Belichick said he spoke with Meriweather in Miami and several times said the team is "comfortable" with the pick. He referred to Meriweather's comments on the Florida International brawl, when Meriweather said he "ran over there and made a bad decision." Asked about the shooting incident, Belichick simply said, "We're comfortable with the player we added. There's not much else to add." Belichick was asked to confirm the report on NFL Network earlier today that the Pats were talking with Oakland for a trade involving Randy Moss. The coach said, "First of all, a lot of things are talked about this time of year, so I have no comment. I wouldn't comment on another player in the league." |
