BOSTON — Boston Celtics forward Wally Szczerbiak is set to undergo season-ending ankle surgery, the team announced on Wednesday.

Team physician Dr. Brian McKeon will perform the surgery at the New England Baptist Hospital on March 8.

Szczerbiak has missed significant playing time in four of the last five seasons because of injuries. The forward has missed 24 games this season due to injury — all but one due to ankle sprains.

Szczerbiak, an eighth-year pro, sprained his left ankle during the Celtics’ game against the Sacramento Kings on Feb. 20, the latest of several injuries to both of his ankles this season.

In 32 games this season, he averaged 15 points and three rebounds in 28 minutes per game.
